Product Description

with Kevin Sutton,
Montverde Academy Men's Basketball Head Coach,
NIKE Skill Academy Instructor

Coach Sutton's concept of defense is to force turnovers and create offense on the other end. The \"55\" is a 2-1-2 full court zone press and is a defensive cornerstone in this program. While doing this the opponent will become fatigued, leading to more success. Defensive principles are important and include: Ball pressure, containing the dribble, force the ball into trap areas and up the sidelines. Sutton's scramble/recovery mode is based on closet man/closest ball. The first press illustrated by Sutton is the 2-2-1 zone press. The first line of defense contains two guards and they apply pressure first. The two half court players have middle and deep coverage based on ball position. They are also used as interceptors when longer passes are thrown. The last player has the back line and protects the basket. Sutton shares another press, 56, that starts in a 2-1-2 alignment. Both presses are tools to dictate tempo and speed up a game to the disadvantage of the opponents in many ways.

  5. Inadequate & not worth the money

Coach Sutton explains things clearly, and his immediate rapport with players is good to see. This video gives no breakdown drills, however, and most of it is Coach Sutton reading a bulleted list of defensive goals, focus points, etc. I'm glad to know that they want to rebound on defense. Every coach wants to rebound on defense. Why doesn't he show what he DOES in practice to incorporate rebounding into his 2-2-1 press? I have my own ideas, but I just paid money for his.
This is just another in a long line of Championship Productions videos that is poorly planned and poorly executed. They carted their cameras into a gym, saw a coach talking, decided to film him, asked him to look at the camera and tell his name afterwards, then packaged it up and sold it.
I found this DVD to be no more valuable than some random coach's blog, where he lists his defensive points of emphasis and has some diagrams. They should charge $5 max. The reason I didn't give it 1 star is because I saw Tubby Smith's "Full-Court Match-Up Pressure Defense" -- which sets a standard for lousiness that all other bad videos have no hope of achieving.
