Actually, it could work for that very reason.
If the 4 doesn't dive, his man can sag off and provide help without risk because the 4 is typically not a perimeter shooter.
In this scenario if the 4's man steps up to provide help, 4 is open on the block, as opposed to 20 feet away.

          My only argument with this is if you have the 4 guy cut down the middle, you're bringing that defender with him, so the middle technically isn't that open. Maybe have the 4 set a pick for the 2, since typically the #2 guy is the shooting guard.

          @alex2405777 We do almost exactly as you say - the 4 screens away for 2 and then rolls to weak side block ... the 1 then uses the 4 also as a screen .... we can attack ...s/r and also swing to opposite corner for a jumper...we can do this out of the standard set or from 4 high ... I agree - if 4 goes down too early it clogs middle, you might get a bounce from 5-4 but really I rather leave the area open a bit ... thx

Balance is the key here. Everyone knows when it goes past the point of competing to rubbing it in. There is no "One Size Fits All" score. Each age & ability level has a different threshold of where it becomes too much. The goal of competition in basketball is not to destroy your opponent's will to ever compete again. The goal is the compete at the highest level possible while honoring the core constructs of being a great human being.

As a college coach I believe in having my team competing from buzzer to buzzer, but I have many ways to keep the "Humiliation Factor" down if we are crushing a team. Substituting, Switching Defenses, Running the "New" Offensive Sets, Allowing a back up player to play a lead role for longer periods of time. We value our time on the court in practice and games. i will never ask my guys to give less that everything they have, but we can still compete full in a 2-3 zone rather than a full court press. We can compete fully in a passing game offense that looks to score under 10 seconds on the clock rather than fast breaking every possession against the lesser opponent.

I look at it as an opportunity to work on a part of the game that we will need later on against better competition when we experience foul trouble or a dwindling lead down the stretch.

At the end of the day "Sportsmanship" takes many forms. Do not insult your opponents by not playing, but do not insult your opponents by destroying them beyond all recognition.

          So this is actually just another initiation option for the five out motion.
I'm assuming your basic motion remains the same. Pass from the top of the key, cut, fill backside, and so on.

          @99jaydenz
its not a matter of what 'works' - its a matter of whether you can teach it properly and if it's appropriate for your personnel.
If the coach can teach and the players can play, it 'works'. Same is true of the high-low offense - although the open post and high low are polar opposites.

I want to press from the opponents from missed shots and free throws. Please advice. I want to be super aggressive. Because my team has no good shooters and we shoot a very low fg percentage. So I want majority of our shots to come from layups. What do you advise. Also what is the most aggressive steals/turnover type of press.

          True that freddy. I like this. And it's usable in the high post as well. The reverse pivot can be used as well if your agile enough.

1) No it's not. It's a travel if he picks up that inside foot after he pivots.
2) Even if it is, do it fast enough and ref's won't call it

          @chris71388 for every dribble, you get 2 steps you can take; if you stop dribbling and then take those 2 steps, it becomes a 1-2 stop, and the 1st step is now your pivot foot, the 2nd step is your non-pivot foot; you can lift the 2nd foot, not the 1st (pivot foot). it would've been a travel if ganon gathered the ball during taking the inside foot step, but since he was doing it during the outside foot step, banana403's right.

          I am sorry, but that is not unstoppable! You would be moving right into helpside defense in most cases, even on man to man coverage, let alone against a zone D.....you are going all the way across the key....

I live in a country where basketball is a major sport, but not as big as it is in the USA. Scouting of teams rarely happens and there is not much game footage available to other coaches.

I had a team run the score on my boys after my two best players went down with injuries. The score finished up 119 - 20. We gave the opposing team three cheers then shook hands.

5 weeks later I watched this team dominate the state semi finals and finals. I recorded both games and sent the DVD to the number one ranked team in the country. These two teams played in the national final later that season.

While I didn't get to see the national final being played, the score at the end of the first quarter was 31-7. The top ranked school went on to dominate and win the national title with ease and I have no doubt the footage I sent up to them played a considerable part in their success.

What goes around, comes around.

I've been on both sides of the scoreboard. It's fairly easy to tell when you're dominating another team. There is a benefit to teaching both life and basektball lessons when in this situation. You can pull back your press and work on a defense that you don't play well. You can stop fast breaking and set up offenses that you'll need later in the year. As a Coach, you can continue to have your players play hard, use your bench to get them some seasoning and work on offenses/defenses that will help you down the road.

[...] http://www.WealthCreationTemplate.com/?t=aricleI12.11.09abYour internet marketing strategies have everything to with the Psychology of persuading. You have to...l go from good to great. They spend time studying people, and what makes them tick. They learn that people don't trust right off the bat, and need to get to know you before they trust you. Being consistent in a message will help you grow that trust with ease. Testing has been online amoxil done in the psychology of persuading over the years by analyzing how people finally say yes. In essence, these tests are saying that people want to be consistent with previous actions.If they said yes to something in the past, they are more likely to say yes in the future. What does this mean to you as an internet marketer? You want to get your prospects to say yes to something small. The best way of doing that is to ask them for a tiny commitment first before the big sale. You don't want to ask for the largest sale right off the bat. Here is an amoxicillin example of what I mean, and how it could apply to your internet marketing sales funnel. For the purpose of demonstrating an idea, I'm going to use training and coaching as the product in the sales funnel.First, have them opt in to your auto responders, and download a free report, or short video series. You could have these videos add up to about 10 minutes in length, or 10 minutes in reading.The next step is to offer them the Expanded or Upgrade version of a few videos on this topic. These videos would be longer and add up to 45 minutes or an 1 hour. Remember, this is all really valuable content, not just fluff. Give them something they can sink their orthodontics into. After that series, offer them the opportunity to buy the "DVD" for a lifetime reference. This DVD again will provide buy amoxil online super valuable content. Think about what they will want, and where their mind is when they are making their first official purchase. Since this is their first purchase, make it small, around the $19.97 price point.Next you might offer them free 10 minute consultation if they bought your DVD. Make sure that the DVD is good content that keeps them wanting more. This consultation is a perfect point for them to get to know you personally. Be real, authentic, and helpful. Your underlying goal here is to help them with their problem. You always want to help them first, and foremost. Once they have gotten to know you, they will now trust you, and begin to really value you for what you can offer them. You are now providing them a consistent solution to their problem. The next buying proposition could be "Private access to training" in a group setting. This time the value is raised and the price is $395. You want to also make a 110% money back guarantee, so they feel the risk is low. The key is to under promise, and over deliver. You keep them wanting buy amoxil more.The next phase in the sales funnel could be a opportunity for "Private one-on-one coaching". This is a larger ticket item. It could cost $2,000 and includes 200% money back guarantee. You will guarantee that without any doubt, they will get results or get their money back and free coaching. This is about over delivering on a solution to their problems.Of course, this is an example of a sales funnel, and not everyone is selling internet marketing training - but you can get the idea. The idea is that if you provide valuable content, in small doses, they will want more. The lesson here is really about trust combined with value, and having patience with your newly found prospect. Once they buy from you once, and find what you have to offer is extremely valuable, they will come back for more. [...]

This is about over delivering on a solution to their problems.Of course, this is an example of a sales funnel, and not everyone is selling internet marketing training – but you can get the idea. The idea is that if you provide valuable content, in small doses, they will want more. The lesson here is really about trust combined with value, and having patience with your newly found prospect. Once they buy from you once, and find what you have to offer is extremely valuable, they will come back for more. [...]

I agree that you need to teach your players to play 100% at all times, but when you are up big in a game, that is a great opprotunity to work on other aspects of the game. If you are a man team, work on playing zone, etc. Change your personnel so that some of bench players experience varsity play in case you ever need them due to injury.

The passing is actually a good idea for the fastbreak as it helps to confuse the defenders on the intention of the players as well as more opportunity for a player to have an open shot.

The software used to diagram and animate the plays on this site is bbplaybook. Its a simple Windows based software - I believe it costs 29.99.

There really aren't any good alternatives for MAC users, and you're right about online tools; they rarely get the job done and usually take way too long to figure out.

There are several more expensive programs like Crez and FastDraw - both cost several hundred dollars and include featured like file sharing and scouting tools. They cannot, however, animate the drills.

The two man cuts will most likely be adjusted to VERY quickly by any half-way decent match-up zones. However, the 3 cuts seems like it could be effective and hard to adjust to for awhile. The tactic I have seen work most effectively at the high school level is for a player or two to set screens away from the ball, making sure to ALWAYS roll properly on the screens and then flash BACK towards where they came from. The person receiving the screen may or may not use it to cut across the middle but if the screener always rolls and flashes back properly it leaves the defensive player behind them in possibly advantageous areas (elbow, low post, for example).

To combat the lack of movement by the "3", you could have the "2" set a back screen for the "3" and let the "3" use the screen to set up the continuity and continue to exchange them.

Big fan of the R&R. Marketing is a little over the top, but I think it is a great way to teach team offense. It focuses on teaching motion concepts by progression and through repetition. The benefit for a feeder program is the way that it is taught not the motion concepts.

Thanks for the play on how to crack the match-up zone defensive. Now just how would you move the ball to the other side...what would be the correct player movement to have the same alignment to begin attacking from the weak side.
Good defensive teams might adjust I like to move the ball from side to side at least once even twice to get penetration through. Thanks once again. If you could draw it up, would be helpful.

Couldn't agree more with this post. My son's JV team was up by 44 in the 4th quarter and our coach thought it best to keep the starters in until 4 minutes left in the 4th, shoot 3's the whole way, and most horrific he kept the full court press on until 2 minutes left in the game. The other coach started inserting bench guys in the middle of the 3rd when the deficit hit 40 points but not our coach. Not only was I embarassed but I actually sought out the other coach and apologized. Spoke to my son about it and he was just as upset as he had to be the one pressing the whole game and showing up the other players some who he was friends with. I would like to pull my son from the team but couldn't do it to my son as he loves playing. There is no room for NBA wannabe coaches at the high school JV level!

the author of this story is a true jackass. I competed on a high level all my life and was always taught to be sportsmanlike. i wouldn't be surprised if his players took a couple of cheap shots every once in a while if not outright punches to the face.

his philosophy definitely should not apply to the recreation level where in some leagues in some years, the level of talent is severely uneven. there's no joy in using your starters most of the game to beat a team by 40 points in 5th grade. You're not doing your town or your players a favor. those bench sitters will soon drop the sport as will your opponent players. Too bad, because one of them sprung up eight inches last year, but he's been so turned off to basketball that he refuses to play, all because of an idiotic jackass like this author.

I also like to have my players shoot off the plays. We run a 4 high set. We practice the post catching the ball and hitting the wing back door since that is our first option, we shoot off it and practice different parts. We practice passing to the wing and the pointguard rubbing off the post for the layin with the pass coming from the wing. EVERYONE plays all parts, but they get lots of reps, learn all positions, and also learn how to shoot out of the offense

I beg to differ. You're the coach. You dictate how sloppy things get - not the inherent rhythm (or lack thereof) in ANY drill.

wow! this match up zone offense is indeed amazing and very effective if executed properly. In every game of basketball, it is very important for the team to have their best defensive and offensive moves. This post really helps a lot. Thanks for sharing this post!:)

Interesting article/opinion/philosophy...and it is truly a philosophy which is shaped by the authors experience, personality, passion, style and motivation as a coach. To suggest its application en mass, for all coaches at all levels, ages, grades, schools, etc, like Lauren in this reply section for example, who touches on this point, is a good thing, is wide open for debate to the contrary. Perhaps if Coach D clarified where he thinks this "cut throat" for the good of the game, for everyone, style may best be applied, it would be more complete. Little kids? Grammar School? High School girls JV? When average talent that normally loses, is finally meeting up with really untalented well meaning players and can win by a lot? Etc. It's a philosophy he has. I don't, others may....I'm sure however that his survival to the fittest, get better or get out, would produce less players but a higher level of player if applied everywhere...hypothetically.

I agree completely...the screening action is hard not to love, but as a broader offensive scheme you want to have something in place that involves everybody more.

Though I will say...I've seen kids with the 'hot hand' use this action to explode for 25+ points...against man to man as well as junk defenses!

I really like the slice cut and double stagger action for the "1" and the "2". Can see this being effective vs. junk defense. I do not like the fact that the three man never moves off the left wing. Just my thoughts.

I like Dick DeVenzio and got a ton of great stuff from his Point Guard College. I can see his point here and as a coach I have always had the upmost respect for the game, players and other coaches. However, I've had some difficulty developing that killer instinct once we get a team down by 15 or 20.
So, I guess what I am asking here is, when is enough, enough? At what point do you turn the game into a teaching/learning opportunity. I've been up and had to fight off a comeback numerous times in the name of sportsmanship and not wanting to run up a score. I understand that practice is where you develop this killer instinct/attitude, but again, he has some great points!
In FCA we talk about playing for God! How do you do that? By going 100% at all times for His glory. By being the ultimate competitor! What I get from this article and your take on it is that players need to play one way and one way only, full bore! I don't believe you can coach kids to take it easy. Therefore, this article is not really such a bad article, because it is simply telling players that; give it your all the entire time! To me, the response is aimed at COACHES, not players! The article is for PLAYERS, the response is for COACHES, and I can agree with both of them!

< <Do you have any break down drills to teach this offense >>>
The offensive concepts are similar to motion, though the rules are more structured...so my teaching would not change too much if I switched to this offense.

1. I'd do some whole method work , having units of 5 run the set 5 on 0 for fifteen to twenty quick passes, to get enough game-speed reps to run it in a game without breaking down. Every body does dummy 5 on 0 offense...but I think the key is to do it in quick spurts and maintain a great practice tempo. Walking through it will actually make your execution worse...and that's what most teams do, unfortunately.

2. Timing matters in this offense - offensive timing is just as important as offensive movement - we want to reverse the ball to a player moving off of the weak-side down-screen - we dont want her to be too early and end up standing on the wing waiting for the ball (recipe for turnovers)...and we don't want her to be late off of the screen (bogs down the offense and stymies ball movement) - so I'd spend some time emphasizing that by working on L-cuts / V-cuts, forcing offensive players to only pass to MOVING teammates on the perimeter, and forcing the offense to do it properly against defensive pressure.

3. Since we're looking for low post mismatches I'd work with everybody on proper post feeds, from below the FT line extended, faking high to pass low, and faking low to pass high; relocating on post feeds, and on individual post play

< <plus plays and options off of it?>>
--I don't know you're personnel, strengths, etc, etc.
Sometimes If have the ball-side post player (4) is a good shooter I'll have him screen away for 5. 5 goes to the ball-side block and now 4 comes off of 1's downscreen to the top. ..so 4 gets executes pick the picker action then immediately comes off of a big-little screen looking for a jumper. Both pick the picker and little-big screens can produce good shots...doing both of them at once can produce even better shots.

< <It is good for high school>>
-Yes it is. I tent to use it a special play with high-schoolers, when motion isnt getting us any shots, or when motion starts to get too loose and we need a solid, structured possession in order to re-focus.

Remember that you can kind plays and sets anywhere...they are a dime-a-dozen. and this is no exception. What matter is how well you teach your players and how well you can respond to them.

Both pick the picker and little-big screens can produce good shots…doing both of them at once can produce even better shots.

< <It is good for high school>>
-Yes it is. I tent to use it a special play with high-schoolers, when motion isnt getting us any shots, or when motion starts to get too loose and we need a solid, structured possession in order to re-focus.

Remember that you can kind plays and sets anywhere…they are a dime-a-dozen. and this is no exception. What matter is how well you teach your players and how well you can respond to them.

H-
I can understand where you're coming from -- several fans and the entire state of New York would agree. But a couple of those points - however common they are to sports fans - are flat out ridiculous.
<br />
1. Freezing out Jordan... Come on...it didn't happen. I watched that game. As great as we all know Jordan is today, in 1985 he was a rookie playing on a team with Dr. J, Larry Bird, and other legends - nobody would have spent the entire game passing to Jordan unless they could see into the future. Jordan scored 7 points on 9 shots in 22 minutes in that game. Adrian Dantley scored 10 points on 6 shots in 23 minutes and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored 11 points on 10 shots in 23 minutes. Did Magic Johnson freeze them out?
<br />
2. The Magic Johnson thing. Does it strike anybody as odd that Magic says "Isiah was like a brother to me" but that he never said a word to Isiah about those rumors? Instead he pretended they were friends and never said anything about it until he was trying to promote a book 20 years later. Isiah Thomas had a brother who died from AIDS, and he lobbied to get Magic into the All-Star game after Magic's retirement, when people like Karl Malone wanted to boycott . Thomas wasn't and isn't that ignorant about AIDS, and while Magic may be a nice guy, he's clearly two-faced and more focused on selling books than on his friendships.
<br />
3. Knight... Isiah would have been criticized if he had publicly supported Knight...now he's being criticized for things he didn't say. It just tells me that he's a lightning rod to basketball fans, whether those fans love him or hate him.

Come on people really, Lambier was a crafty border line dirty player. Any one who knows competition can understand that it gets heated whether practice or games. Michael Jordan was cocky and arrogant as a rookie, It cant make you a bad guy for wanting the youngster to show some respect for the league and the other stars. The fact that the other all stars responded tells the true story. Bobby Knight is a hell raiser and got it right where he deserved it and it doesn't make you bad for letting it happen alumni or not. Now Mr. Thomas is no different than any other man with power working closely with women. Just like the President he ran into one with an agenda and he got popped.
<br />
Also 400 years of history tells us that America is racist down to its core and gives him the right to be aware of black/white perception on all levels. Doesn't make him bad does it?
<br />
The guy knew Magic a long time before the HIV thing, he could know something we don't.

Nice drill. I like that the shooters are constantly moving before catching and shooting. Also, can you let me know the software you are using to diagram your drills. I am a Mac user and I have not found a software that I can use to design and diagram drills and plays.

Any help would be appreciated.

I like your perspective - especially the 'kids lessons'- but I can never get past the lack of character he continually revealed over his career. You watched him do great things - i saw only questionable acts that i thnk spoke volumes about the type of person Thomas is and was. This is the same guy who sucker punched 'his friend' Bill Lambeer in the face at practise and in a blatant act of jealousy talked his Eastern squad teammates into freezing out rookie Micheal Jordan in the all star game. This is the same clown who shoved Mark Price into the crowd in a playoff game (who hates Mark Price!?) and spread the rumours that Magic Johnson contracted HIV through homosexual acts. When people in his life needed help - see: Bobby Knight's very ugly exit at Indiana - he never once spoke out publically in support. You mention the labour front - how about single handedly bankrupting the CBA then walking away? From the Raptors to the Knicks, everything this guy touches turns to _____. Period. I beleive this will be his true legacy. If youre looking for a real role model, look no further than his backcourt teammate, Joe Dumars.

Coach,

A couple thoughts:

I'd consider a zone press, only because you are already teaching man to man as your basic defense so a zone allows you to give a different look.

Another advantage of a zone - especially a 2-2-1 - is that the rotations are relatively simple - running it well still takes time,. effort, and discipline, but the basics are simple and easy to teach. Check out the free ebook on Perfect Practice and/or the free 2-2-1 press offered on www.HoopClinics.com for more information.

One last thing...a press is great for teams that run 8 or 9 deep - you'll be able to rotate players in and out consistently and stay more active.

Looking to implement a press with an athletic, yet somewhat undisciplined intercity girls team. When I say undisciplined i mean that they have not played together (graduated 4 senior starters) and they may have had little coaching to this point. I always want the girls to be aggressive and have opportunities to make plays so we have played man-to -man as a base D for the past five years.

I feel that I need a good month of practice and early games to instill the concepts we are looking for in our man D but i want to expand to a 3/4 or full court press mid season - zone or man would do it. I think i will have 8 or 9 playable girls

thanks for any help

Thanks for the response, Coach. I agree that the wing player doesn't necessarily need to be completely stationary; there needs to be some movement if the defense is trying to pinch the outlet. But that movement should occur after the outlet man gets to the outlet area and gets his back to the sideline. That positioning will allow for vision of the floor - and for the outlet man to make a V-cut to receive the pass. Trying to force the outlet pass when the point guard doesn't have vision of the floor is usually a recipe for turnovers. Even if he can avoid the turnover, if the PG isn't positioned to see the floor he's going to have a tough time finding teammates.

great drill offers a god variation of passes and player responsibilities. However would have player number one catch the outlet pass while moving to the wing. I feel this gives better protection against the defensive guard denying the pass to prevent a fastbreak.

Josh,
I agree with making the kids mentally tough. I did this in two ways.. running situations at the end of every practice so they know HOW to handle things in games. That way, nothing fazes them since they are prepared. Will we run into something new from time to time? Of c0urse, but at least they are used to dealing with pressure situations! ... and then one of my favorites, which I called "Character Building" During scrimmages or any of the situations we ran, I would purposely make a BAD call. It was amazing how fast they caught on to this, they learned to play through adversity which carried over to games. (After awhile they just looked at me and smiled. We got very few Ts - unless it was on me :-)
Just some thoughts here.

That is a great approach as well, coach!

as long as you have a good ‘reason why’, any wrinkle or variation is a good one

That is a nice secondary break. We run it similar, but we leave the 2 out on the wing so that if the ball is reversed, the three can penetrate (especially if a big man closes out on a switch). Then if the defender on 2 collapses to take away penetration, we can kick it out for a jump shot.
