How To Beat a Box and One Defense

How To Beat a Box and One Defense

“Slice Stagger”

Box and 1 Continuity -Player being defended = 1 or 2 (or 3)

Box and One Offense

This set features diagonal slice cuts and staggered double screens for both the point guard and wing player (1 and 2 in this diagram).

- As a result, it is equally effective when the box and 1  is focused on the point guard or a wing player.

- It can be run as a continuity

  • 1  passes to the wing and makes a diagonal “slice cut” to the ballside corner- A post player
  • (5) should fill the space at the top of the key

On ball reversal the wing player (2) makes a diagonal slice cut off of the post player’s (4) screen.  4 should step up and off the block to set the screen

  • Immediately after 4 screens for 2,  5 and 4 set a staggered double screen for 1 coming to the top of the key
  • 1 comes off of the staggered double immediately following  2′s slice cut to the block

As the ball is reversed to the top of the key, 4 and 5 set another staggered double.  The second staggered screen is set for 2 coming back through to the wing

With this action, both 1 and 2 have completed slice cuts, and immediately come off of a  staggered double screen.

I really like the slice cut and double stagger action for the “1″ and the “2″. Can see this being effective vs. junk defense. I do not like the fact that the three man never moves off the left wing. Just my thoughts.

  2. I agree completely…the screening action is hard not to love, but as a broader offensive scheme you want to have something in place that involves everybody more.

Though I will say…I’ve seen kids with the ‘hot hand’ use this action to explode for 25+ points…against man to man as well as junk defenses!

  3. Julian kaye says:

To combat the lack of movement by the “3″, you could have the “2″ set a back screen for the “3″ and let the “3″ use the screen to set up the continuity and continue to exchange them.
