Fast Break Drill: Bigs

Click the images to zoom in

bigs1 Purpose: To teach your big players to outlet the ball and sprint the floor to the ballside block in transition.  For guards, to work on receiving the outlet pass, completing a baseball pass up the floor, and on flattening the defense in transition in order to feed the low post.

Organization: Six Players start on the floor.  2 post players, each holding a ball, stand on either side of the basket on the same side of the floor.  One guard stands on each outlet spot on the court (4 in total).  Post players are lined up out of bounds behind 5 and 6 (not pictured).

Procedure:

1.  Each post player completes an outlet pass to the ballside and sprints directly up the floor to the ballside block on the other end of the floor.

2.  After receiving the outlet pass, 1 and 3 each makes a baseball pass directly up the floor to the guard on the wing.

3.  After receiving the pass on the wing, 2 and 4 each take 1 or 2 short dribbles towards the baseline to flatten the defense and buy the post players time to establish position for the post up.

4.  After 5 and 6 have established low post position, they each receive a post feed and make a scoring move.

5.  5 and 6 rebound their shots and repeat the action back to the other end of the floor.

Coaching Points:

1.  Outlet players should position themselves with their backs facing the sidelines to receive the outlet pass so they have vision of the floor.

2.  Some coaches prefer to have their players throw sidearm baseball passes; some prefer overarm passes.  Whichever you teach, teach it consistently.

3.  When feeding the post, fake high to pass low (off the defender’s hip), and fake low to pass high (off the defender’s ear).

4.  Big Players must SPRINT.

Excellent drill I will definitely use next year- great for fast break positioning and big man conditioning!

  2. I like this drill because there are six players involved! Great for team building!
