xout1 242x300 X out layups shooting drillPurpose: Shooting several layups from a variety of different angles

Organization: Players form lines out of bounds under any available basket. The front player in each line has a ball.

Procedure:

  • The first player in line (1) dribbles to the ball side elbow using 2 quick, aggressive dribbles.
  • When he reaches the elbow, 1 stops on his inside (left foot in this depiction) foot, changes direction,
x-out shooting drilland explodes off of the same (left) foot back to the basket for a layup. 1 should turn to the outside so that he is facing away from the middle on the explosion to the basket.

  • After the first basket, 1 rebounds his shot and dribbles to the opposite elbow using no more than 2 dribbles
  • Again 1 plants his inside foot (now the right foot) at the elbow and explodes back to the basket for the layup.
  • Since 2 shots completes a player’s turn, 1 rebounds his layup, passes to the next man in line (2), and goes to the end of the line.

Variation #1

  • The coach can add two more shots to the circuit
  • After making the second layup, 1 rebounds his shot and dribbles out tothe corner
  • 1 stops at the 3pt. line, turns, and explodes off of his outside (right) foot back to the basket and makes a reverse layup
  • 1 rebounds the 3rd shot and finishes the circuit by dribbling to the other corner and coming back for a final reverse layup with the opposite (left) hand.

Variation #2

  • If possible the coach should make the drill competitive by grouping players into teams.
  • Each team of 2 +  players runs the drill at a basket, rotating through and counting how many shots  hey make as a team in the time allotted by the coach.   The team that makes the most – or misses the least  shots, in the allotted time wins.
  • Great players and teams constantly compete hard against each other – layup drills such as this one become much more beneficial when competition is introduced into the drill.

Coaching Points.

  • Player should plant, change direction hard, and explode to the basket for the layup.  After the turn, most players should only need once dribble to explode to the basket for the layup.  Sometimes a player
might need 2 dribbles.  They should never need three dribbles.
  • One benefit of this drill is that it forces  players to shoot from several different angles – the player should be aware of the shooting angles that the backboard provides.
