Russian Layup Drill 2

Purpose: High Speed Layups and Conditioning

Organization: Players form 4 lines – one on each wing.
2 wing players – both on the same sideline – have a ball.
There a two balls used in this drill.

Procedure:

1. Each wing player with a ball dribbles to the basket for a high
speed layup. The opposite wings go to the basket to rebound the
shot, like a standard elementary-level layup drill.

2. Shooters sprint directly into the rebounding line on the
opposite end of the floor.

3. Rebounders pass the ball ahead to the next shooter in line, and
then sprint directly to the shooting line on the opposite end of the
floor.

Coaching Points:

1. Layups are shot from one side only, so it is a good idea to
change the direction of the drill

2. This is a good “conditioning with the ball” drill. A good
goal for this drill might be 25 consecutive made layups with the ball
only hitting the ground when the shooter is driving to
the rim. No dropped rebounds.

3. Shooters should get to the basket in 2 dribbles – possibly 3
for younger middle and grade school kids.

4. Shooters should explode to the rim for the shot, leaving their
feet well outside of the lane.
